2016 Olympic Sport Trends #infographic #2016Olympics #Trends

With the Summer Olympics right around the corner, we decided to pull together our most exciting Olympic-related image video search data to share what interests you the most about the upcoming games. We threw in a couple of fun Olympic facts, too. Here’s what we found.

About The Olympics & Rio de Janiero
The buzz around this summer’s games began after the Olympics in London closed in 2012. Searches for “Rio Olympics” in Shutterstock are over 4000% higher now since 2012, even though Rio was chosen for the 2016 Summer Olympics way back in 2009.

This August 10,500 will compete for 306 different medals in 42 sports.

The 2012 London Olympic Games were seen by over half the world’s population. About 100,000 hours of 2012 Olympic footage were streamed or broadcast.

Your Favourite Olympic & Paralympic Sports
The most popular Olympic sport image searches were soccer-related, but golf won the video category. Basketball slam-dunked the top spot for Paralympic searches.

Popular Olympic sports across both categories include golf, hockey, swimming, basketball, football and soccer.

The fastest growing Olympic sports varies by country and runs the gamut from table tennis to taekwondo.

Search Volume
Search volume for the terms “Olympics” and “Paralympics” skyrocketed since 2014. The term “Olympics” saw a 20% increase in 2014, while Paralympics had a 23% increase. In 2015, the increases were smaller at 18% (“Olympics”) and 16% (“Paralympics”).
