Top Tips for Renovating and Decorating your First Home

Renovating and personalising your first home once moved in can be a daunting prospect, and often you might not even know where to start. Alongside this informative infographic from RWinvest, here’s a short guide for first-time homeowners or renters, detailing some top tips on renovating and decorating your property.

Colouring and painting

Choosing an overall theme for the rooms within your property, as well as colour schemes and styles, is an important step that can be hard to visualise. Deciding on the colour is also quite worrying.

Neutral tones often stay timeless, and so are among some of the safest and long-lasting choices to go with. They also tend to match up with anything, which means you won’t necessarily have to worry as much about colour coordinating furniture or messing up the Feng Shui with existing ornaments and items that you’re bringing over to the home. As displayed in our infographic, some of the best colours to go with include; cream, grey, brown and white. Try to steer clear of neon or bright colours, although if you do want to add a splash of colour you could create a feature wall as a one-off standout.

Top Tip – Finding it hard to visualise your chosen colour scheme? Try using an AR app using your smartphone at home. This technology can overlay different pieces of furniture and paint on your existing room using the camera, showing you a rough idea of what the home might look like when completed. Examples of effective VR include IKEA’s place and Spark VR.

Making a list and ordering your different priorities

With so much to do when you move into your house, it can be difficult trying to decide where to start, what’s most important, and what you should allocate the most money towards. Plan out each different room in the home, and make a list ordered by importance of things to tackle. This way, you’ll feel like you’re chipping away at a project rather than running in circles and not making any progress.

Here are some ideas for lists that you might want to make and fill out when you get the chance:

  • What do you have? – This should help you to figure out what you can get rid of, what you need to spend money on, and what you can keep and reuse.
  • What do you need? – Allows you to prioritise the important stuff that you need to get sorted first, such as needed furniture or even simple, final touch things such as cutlery, for example.
  • What is your budget, and how much have you spent? – This is an important thing to make a note of, as it will help you to monitor how much you’re spending as you go, and that you have enough for everything you need along the way.

Budgeting and preparing – A closer look.

Again, make sure that you budget properly for each room in the home, and don’t spend too much in one area. It’s all well and good your front hall looking regal and luxurious, but not if the rest of the home is completely empty! Budgeting properly will ensure that you’ve not spend all of your cash reserves before accounting for the entire home.

Top Tip – Want some more money to put towards new renovations and decorations in the home? Sort through some of your existing furniture and items that you may no longer need and consider selling it online. With a bunch of different online marketplaces such as eBay and even Facebook Marketplace, it’s easier than ever to sell things on, and if what you’re selling is quality, you’ll soon end up with a nice fund to spend on new bits for the home!
